The Indian State Gujurat's 5 Year Export Policy

By Maëlle Alquezar Indian TextilesGujarat - located in western India - is the first Indian state to implement this kind of export policy. Accounting for about a quarter of India’s total exports, the state is planning to increase its share of exports from 25% to 30% in five years by focusing on sectors such as textiles, agriculture and dairy. A study on the Gujurat’s export competiveness led by the Federation of Indian Exports Organization - the apex body of all Export Promotion Organizations in India, set up by the ministry of commerce - identified sectors with export potential in the state. A state government official said that the aim is that Gujarat accounts for 35% of total India’s exports by 2020. Since over 90% of Gujarat’s cotton goes to other states to add value, the state would focus on ready-made clothes. The textile sector is already well developed in Gujarat given that nearly 23% of the state GDP comes from textile and related industries. In 2011-12, Gujarat accounted for 20% of the India’s textile exports. The state also contributed to the country’s exports in sectors such as gems and jewellery (70%), pharmaceuticals (30%), engineering (12%) and chemicals (18%). In terms of infrastructure, Gujarat has 41 minor and intermediate ports and 55 Social Economic Zones (SEZs) specialised in sectors such as biotechnology, power, handicraft, gems and jewellery. Moreover, the state benefits from important natural resources such as spices and seeds, mineral and metals and cotton. Check out these related articles: An Indian Summer for Facebook?
